Thursday 9th December will be when Parliament votes on Conservative Liberal Democrat plans to increase tuition fees despite the Liberal Democrat’s pledge before the general election.

In York the Council will be debating a Labour motion that condemns the increase.

Students and all people who are against this increase can show their support by meeting at St Helen’s Square outside City of York Council at 2.30pm on Thursday 9th December. Helium filled balloons will be provided. Students can write their debt level onto the balloons. They will then be released into the air at 2.45pm to symbolise the student debt level rising and money going into thin air.

A Message from the NUS President

January 25, 2009

“There must be a proper debate about a viable alternative to the current higher education funding system, which is creaking under the pressure of market forces. We need to alleviate the financial pressure on students, graduates and their families, not exacerbate it by contemplating raising the cap on fees. I am delighted that James is launching this campaign in York. I am also very pleased that International Students’ Day 2008 has been chosen to kick off such an important campaign for students’ rights.”

- Wes Streeting, NUS President 17/11/08
